In my Beinecke talk, I focused on the slave labor that went into the building of Yale College in the first half of the 18th century, and in particular I discussed the relationship between Yale and slavery in the building of Connecticut Hall. I began by contextualizing the importance of the oldest surviving building on campus, then explained just how small Yale used to be and how slowly it grew. Connecticut Hall has a prominent place in histories of Yale, as a cornerstone of what made the College a college. One key takeaway from the talk is that slave labor helped build Connecticut Hall, and thus, also belongs in the story of how Yale became a college.
